Lesser Gods

The ancient Greeks did not only believe in the Titan and Olympian gods but they also believed that there were other gods, known as the lesser gods.

There were many lesser gods and one of them was Demeter who was the goddess of corn, grain, and the harvest. The ancient Greeks believed that Demeter would make the crops grow each year. At a harvest, the first loaf of bread was always offered to her. Demeter is the goddess who laid a curse on the World. The curse caused plants to wither and die.

Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and she was abducted by Hades, the god of the Underworld, and became his wife and the Queen of the Underworld. Dionysus, another god, is the god of the vine and he invented wine. Eros is the god of love and he is the son of Aphrodite. The goddess of youth is Hebe. Eris is the goddess of discord. She sometimes accompanies Ares to battles. Helios is the Greek sun god. The greek god of death is Thanatosos. Pan is the god of goat and sheep herds. In appearance Pan looks like a human being, but he has the feet and horns of a goat. The 3 gods, Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thalia, dance and sing for the gods. The Erinnyes, also known as the Furies, punish crime. They relentlessly peruse wrong doers until death. The Fate gods are very powerful because they can decide a mans destiny and they also assign a man to good or evil. Even though these gods weren't as powerful as the Olympians or Titans, they were greatly worshiped.
