RELIGION

In ancient Greece people believed in many powerful Greek gods and they would do many things to please the gods. There were temples and statues made in honor of Zeus and the other Greek gods In Athens, Greece the goddess Athena (AKA Athene) was believed to watch over the city, and won the people's love over the sea god Poseidon because she offered the citizens an Olive tree.

The Parthenon is a temple in Athens made for Athena. Along with the temples and statues there were also sacrifices made to please the gods. Some sacrifices consist of animals such as oxen and goat. Some offering to the gods were land, trees, people, liquids, and springs. There were also festivals held for the gods.

 

One of the festivals made for the gods is 'Feast Day'. In honor of the gods, athletic competitions and sacrifices were held every four years. Some festivals are the Eleusinian Mysteries, which is held every five years, and the Festival for Dionysus is held in the spring. When bread was made the first loaf of bread was always offered to Demeter for he was said to give man wheat and grains. Greek plays were also made to copy the actions of the Greek gods. Greek gods were said to have done many things and so they were worshipped.
