I.LIS 592 Standards Based Curriculum Using Computers
A.JUSTIFICATION:The Computer Education program needs to develop and
enhance curriculum standards. Students need to function in a
technological society with necessary skills for post-secondary education
or for the world of work. The purpose of this course is to provide needed
inservice training and instructional resources for librarians/educators who have not
received training, or librarians/educators who need to improve their background
knowledge to incorporate standards into their curriculum.
B.GOALS:This course is designed for librarians/educators to explore the technology
resources to collaboratively plan, design and share ideas that integrates
across the curriculum standards.
C.DAILY/WEEKLY PLAN: (Each day will consist of instruction time and lab
time.)
Students will develop an electronic learning portfolio:
Contents of Learning Results Portfolio:
- standard-Based unit plan: all components must be included
- include at least 3 samples of students' work
- reflective journal addressing the following items:
- share information describing the integratiom process.
- how participants/students have met their challenges
- what participants/students have learned from the project
- what were the successes
- suggestions in improving the lesson.
- list Technology resources that were used in developing the lesson plan and explain how they were used.
- time sheet reflecting time spent on activities and integration of the lesson
DAY 1:
(Instruction - 6.5 hours)
Introduction/ Presentation
Standards Based Curriculum
Curriculum/Content Development

Broad Understanding: Big ideas are generalizations or big "over- arching" concepts that connects to the real world. ex. -patterns in mathematical, cycle of nature, system are made up of parts that work together
Group Activity
Develop problem solving skills
Develop cooperative learning skills
Integration of software into the curriculum
Sharing what is done at various schools/grade levels.
A project-based learning environment involves
wondering about a topic
wiggling through information
weaving elements together
Demonstration of various programs - At Ease: Creation/Deletion of folders and files
Search strategies in research using various resources:
Encyclopedia and other CD-ROMs
Internet Search Engines and Education Portals
Bibliography format
Exploring topics involves surprise, curiosity, doubt, brainstorming,
discussing, and reflecting.
(Homework - 5 hours)
Homework - Develop curriculum integrated lesson
DAY 2:
(Instruction - 6.5 hours)
Sharing/Review of curriculum lessons and Day 1
Standards Based Curriculum
Curriculum/Content Development
Group Activity
Essential/driving Questions - Essential questions are problem/issue-based that pushes the entire unit toward the culminating task. They spark our curiosity and sense of wonder. They derive from some deep wish to understand some thing which matters to us. In other words, what do you want your children to be able to answer at the end of the lesson. ex.- What does it mean to be free in a democratic society? Is there life in outer space? Are wetlands endangered? The Questioning Toolkit is an excellent site that explains what essential questions are and also different types of questions as well.
