How to Create a Rubric

What is a rubric? A rubric is an authentic assessment (correspond as closely as possible to real world experience) tool for making scoring decisions.

Why develop a rubric?

* Allow assessment to be more objective and consistent

* Ensure accountability

* Clearly show the student how their work will be evaluated and what is expected

* Provide useful feedback regarding the effectiveness of the instruction

* Provide benchmarks against which to measure and document progress.

* Maintain focus on content and performance standards and student work.

What are the steps in creating a rubric?

* Review the content standards that the lesson is addressing: example- descriptive writing, research report, oral presentation and etc.

* Review the criteria that will be used to judge the student's product or performance.

* Describe the different levels of performance that match each criterion. Choose words or phrases that capture the actual differences among the levels of performance.

* Test the rubric with students to see that it is understandable. (Once the students gain experience with rubrics, they can help construct them)

* Keep track of the strengths and shortcomings of the rubric when you use it to judge student work.

* Revise the rubric as necessary. † †
