

Kelvin Y.S. Chun, a technology resource teacher at Nu'uanu Elementary School, was named a 1999 Disney's American Teacher Awards honoree. The American Teacher Awards recognize exemplary teachers in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve who through innovative and creative teaching methods actively engage their students in learning. Mr. Chun, who was nominated by a former student, is one of only 39 teachers chosen to receive this award from among 11,000 applicants.
Kelvin Y.S. Chun has worked or taught in Hawaii's public schools in the fields of math and computer science for over 15 years. Additionally, he has served on numerous school committees and as an advisor for school organizations and clubs such as the Junior Police Officers and the Nu'uanu Elementary School Technology Club. His spirit of generosity and passion for teaching extends to his extracurricular activities where he as shared his knowledge of Asian kite making, balloon sculpturing, and magic with countless children, adults, and community groups.
Kelvin Y.S. Chun and Nu'uanu Elementary School will each be awarded $2,500, and honorees will be recognized in a ceremony in Los Angeles that will be broadcast on the Disney Channel on November 15, 1999. Honorees will also attend a summer institute in 2000 where they will share and explore innovative teaching approaches, and design and implement a professional development action plan within their school districts.
