Reflective Journal: ( K. Chun)

February Reflective Journal Entry
  1. Where are you with your unit plan (Performance Task Blueprint Document)?

Our original proposal was based on a standards workshop the previous year. At this workshop, the focus was on the DOE standards alliance. The workshop's focus was the 5 stages of doing a standards unit.

    http://www.k12.hi.us/~dtisdell/ata/01-02/standards/alliance.htm

The Hawaii Contents and Performance Standards were brought in:

    and we followed this template:

    We developed a proposal:

    http://www.nuuanu.k12.hi.us/nuuanuweb/standards/samplestd.html

The proposal was modified for TIMP as:

    http://www.nuuanu.k12.hi.us/chun/techintegration/TIMPproposal.html

This proposal was then used for our TIMP workshop to integrate with technology. The standard chosen was: Technology as a tool for research-students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

For the TIMP workshop, we included the school librarian to assist with resources in the library (print, cd-rom, etc).

At the TIMP workshop, we modified this proposal and developed a blueprint:

Notes were taken at the workshop and we developed an outline:

  2. What are some challenges (problems) you've encountered thus far?

Some of the challenges (problems) we've encountered thus far would be to constantly adapting from 1 DOE developed style to another. At one point, the DOE standards alliance was the focus, then the TIMP and Apple styles are being learned.

Other challenges were finding the right topic. How narrow or open-ended should the project be? We needed to coordinate the contact time between the classroom and the "once-a-week" meeting in the library and computer lab. Also, we needed to find the time to meet and coordinate the planning which included lunch breaks, and after school meetings.

How were you able to overcome (solve) these challenges (problems)?

To overcome these challenges, we agreed to the 17th century colonial period that focused on Jamestown.

  3. What were the "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" you've experienced in planning or implementing your lesson?

The shining moments were gotten at the workshop when we saw the many curriculum and technological possibilities and examples.

How have you been able to share these "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" with others?

Whenever people ask us for ideas, we would refer them to the various resources and ideas gotten from the workshops.

  4. What have you learned so far about standards-based lesson development?

Standards based development cover the whole unit starting from the assessment stage. It also included the benchmarks and performance indicators. There are many curriculum areas that could be integrated but we need to focus on what is manageable.

  5. How do you plan to integrate the technology into your standards-based lesson? To integrate technology, we plan to have students do research on the web, create written projects with AppleWorks, and multimedia projects with hyperstudio. Video cameras will be used to document some interviews and an outline done on the web.

March Reflective Journal Entry
  1. Where are you with your unit plan (Performance Task Blueprint Document)?

Students were introduced to the unit. A research link was created on the computer to assist with sites.

    http://www.nuuanu.k12.hi.us/nuuanuweb/Nuuanu%20Class%20pages/grade5.html

This is a short month and they have 3 meetings in the computer lab for research.

  2. What are some challenges (problems) you've encountered thus far?

Some of the challenges were finding information on "Jamestown." There was more information on the time period that followed. One of the focus on the unit was to identify change and continuity in historical eras. Finding primary information was difficult on the web.

How were you able to overcome (solve) these challenges (problems)?

To overcome some of these problems on the computer, the research link was created to assist with research.

  3. What were the "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" you've experienced in planning or implementing your lesson?

The shining moments was when students found relevant information.

They compared how tough life was back in the Colonial period.

How have you been able to share these "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" with others?

Students were able to share these moments with others while creating the projects.

  4. What have you learned so far about standards-based lesson development?

As we moved into the lesson, we're finding that some of the standards were broad based and we needed to focus more to fit in the time.

5. How do you plan to integrate the technology into your standards-based lesson?
This month, the students started to work on AppleWorks and Hyperstudio to develop their project.

April Reflective Journal Entry

  1. Where are you with your unit plan (Performance Task Blueprint Document)?

    Students continued with their research.

  2. What are some challenges (problems) you've encountered thus far? How were you able to overcome (solve) these challenges (problems)?

This month, the 5th graders had testing so not much time was spent on the project during the first 2 weeks. The projects continued afterwards. Some problems were students were saving their work in the wrong places, or projects were being deleted. To overcome this problem, students were told to create a backup in their folders.

  3. What were the "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" you've experienced in planning or implementing your lesson? How have you been able to share these "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" with others?

Shining moments occurred when the students got more familiar with their topic.

  4. What have you learned so far about standards-based lesson development?

Standards-based lesson development is a continually refining process.

  5. How do you plan to integrate the technology into your standards-based lesson?
This month, the students started to work on AppleWorks and Hyperstudio to develop their project.

May Reflective Journal Entry

  1. Where are you with your unit plan (Performance Task Blueprint Document)?

This month, the students were introduced with resources from the library. The librarian sorted out book and cd-rom resources.

  2. What are some challenges (problems) you've encountered thus far? How were you able to overcome (solve) these challenges (problems)?

Time is getting shorter. The 5th grade class needed to move to other topics such as the Revolutionary War.

  3. What were the "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" you've experienced in planning or implementing your lesson? How have you been able to share these "shining moments" or "ah-hahs" with others?

PBS has developed a series called Colonial House on television and on the web. This series is a "reality based" show. The talents had to experience the life of the colonial period.

  4. What have you learned so far about standards-based lesson development?

Students are constantly refining their work.

  5. How do you plan to integrate the technology into your standards-based lesson?
Students will be video taped to show evidence.
