Thank you for taking this time to share this special moment with us as we present to you "Mai Na Kamali'i Mai," our sharing of aloha "From the Children."
Kerstyn:
Many parents and grandparents will agree that the best gifts they've received have been from their children: the ceramic spoon rest with paint spattered unevenly on the edges and the often lopsided ceramic bowls in various colors. These treasures may not look expensive, or be from fancy stores, but they are singing and dancing with love to you &endash; their "true gifts" for all times.
Breeann:
Today we honor our king and queen with songs and dances. Each of our lovely islands is represented by its Prince and Princess.
The entrance of the royal procession is announced by our Mea Pu Kani, Conch Shell Blower, Ethan Landgraf.
(Conch shell blows 3 times)
(Wait for the conch shell blower to walk to his place)
Kerstyn:
Now we present our Mea Oli, Court Chanters, Andrea Chang and Tiana Wong.
(Chanters walk slowly chanting. Wait for the royal chanters to take their places in front of the stage.)
(Wait for music to start...)
Breeann:
Nu'uanu School proudly presents Ka'alani the Royal Attendants, representing the eight islands of Hawai'i.
From the island of Hawai'i, home of the fire goddess Pele, comes Prince Kyler Matsuura and Princess Bianca Roh who wears the lehua blossom of her island. They are accompanied by pa'a kahili, Joshua Cumpston. With them is Lady-in-Waiting Kelsey Kozuma and Gift Bearer Kierstyn Thurmond.
Kerstyn:
The island named for the demigod Maui is represented by Prince Parker Murakami and Princess Monica Roh wearing the delicate lokelani. They are joined by pa'a kahili, Andrew Chun. Escorting them is Lady-in-Waiting Kari Sumida and Gift Bearer Tiana Terai.
Breeann:
Prince Aaron Yoshida escorts Princess Kaila Foltz, wearing a lei 'ilima, representing the island of O'ahu. They are accompanied by pa'a kahili Shea Freedman. Lady-in-Waiting Joy Kurosawa and Gift Bearer Brianne Tengan follow.
Kerstyn:
Pa'a kahili Maxwell Thorn accompanies Prince Jason Lau and Princess Kelly Wong who is adorned with the fragrant mokihana, the flower of Kaua'i. With them are Lady-in-Waiting Jadelyn Okamoto and Gift Bearer Teshya Alo.
Breeann:
Moloka'i, our friendly isle, is represented by Prince Cody Martinson and Princess Kacie Ann Mau who wears the lei kukui. They are accompanied by pa'a kahili, Joshua Cumpston. Lady-in-Waiting Jenna Paranada and Gift Bearer Tabitha Rasay-Adams join them.
Kerstyn:
Prince Blaz Fermantez and Princess Sara Buck, who wears lei kaunaoa of the Lana'i seashore, proudly represent their beautiful island. They are accompanied by pa'a kahili, Andrew Chun. They are followed by Lady-in-Waiting Shaylah Kagehiro and Gift Bearer Katie Lau.
Breeann:
The northernmost island of Ni'ihau is represented by Prince Cody Shishido and Princess Kristen Kojima, who wears the traditional lei pupu of Ni'ihau. They are accompanied by pa'a kahili, Shea Freedman. With them are Lady-in-Waiting Veronica Lau and Gift Bearer Christine Ching.
Kerstyn:
Our smallest island, Kaho'olawe, sends to us Prince Ryan Kubota and Princess Carly Nakano, who wears the gray hinahina moss of their island. They are accompanied by pa'a kahili, Maxwell Thorn. Lady-in-Waiting Tianna Arrell and Gift Bearer Megan Ustare join them.
(MUSIC STOPS PLAYING)
Breeann:
To ensure the safety of our King and Queen come Na Koa, the Royal Guards, Kaeden-James Gamiao and Zachary Wong.
(Wait for royal guards to get into position.)
Please stand for the entrance of the King and Queen.
Pulo`ulo`u the kapu stick, are a sign of royalty approaching. They are held by Peter Donahoe and Cody Kuge
(Wait for Peter and Cody to get into position.)
(Music starts again.)
Kerstyn:
Taylor Suzuki and Jarrin Balmilero will always be near our king and queen carrying Na Kahili Ali'i, the Royal Kahili.
(Waiting for the King and Queen to get into position at top circle.)
Breeann:
AND NOW WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT OUR MAY DAY KING, AARON MORIYAMA (pause) AND OUR MAY DAY QUEEN, KELIANNE MIYAOKA!
(PAUSE, WAIT UNTIL CLAPPING FADES)
Kerstyn:
The King and Queen's Ladies-in-Waiting are Brenna Dela
Rosa and Lisa Roerk. Lei Aloha are Michaela Koseki and Erin Kobayashi.
(STOP MUSIC)
We have come to the moment of presenting leis to our May Day King, Aaron Moriyama and our May Day Queen, Kelianne Miyaoka.
Breeann:
Mrs. Kathy Moriyama will now present her son, King Aaron with a maile lei and Mr. Kel Miyaoka will present his daughter, Queen Kelianne with a pikake lei.
(King and Queen receive their leis and walk to their seats.)
(Wait for parents to walk back to their seats.)
(Wait for Royal Guards to go back to their seats.)

Honored guests, we would now like to present Nu'uanu Elementary School''s May Day Court for 2008!!!

We would also like to recognize Helen Woodward, Elaine Ako Spencer, and Ha'alilio Heyer for providing the wonderful live music for our May Day Celebration!
Mahalo also to Makua Kaulana Crisostomo for helping various grade levels to prepare our keiki for today's May Day performance.
And now, the children of Nu'uanu will honor their King and Queen by performing songs and dances that reflect the joy and happiness of this celebration.

Ahe Lau Makani, a waltz written by Queen Liliuokalani and Mahalo E Hilo Hanakahi, a mele by John Pi'ilani Watkins both tell of a special love and friendship that can be found nowhere else. As our years at Nu'uanu come to a close we are reminded of the love and friendships that we too have found here. In honor of our May Day king and queen, the fifth graders will sing Ahe Lau Makani. A big mahalo to Makua Kaulana and na kumu from E Mele Kakou.
Breeann:
So elegantly and royally done! Thank you King Aaron and Queen Kelianne for your beautiful waltz. Mahalo to the 5th grade court for your wonderful hula performance.
Nu'uanu students, please stand for Oli Mahalo.

We hope you have caught the spirit of "Mai Na Kamali'i Mai" during our May Day Celebration. We know we certainly have. Your presence here today has helped to make this an extra special occasion!
