Attendance areas

HOW ARE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AREAS DETERMINED?

Policy #4150 of the Department of Education states that a student shall attend school in the local attendance area in which his parents reside, except where circumstance indicates that the best interest of the student will be served by granting permission to enroll in a school outside his own attendance area. The Department of Education provides a special pupil personnel service such as the Geographic Exception (GE) for those students requesting permission to attend a school outside of their designated public school area. Geographic Exception Forms and guidelines are available at the child's home school. The time to apply for a Geographic Exception for the coming school year is during the period of January 1 - March 1. Students who apply for a Geographic Exception at any school are placed on a priority list and accepted on a space available basis.

There have been instances of students living outside the district falsifying addresses in the Nuuanu area. This is not a fair practice since many families follow through with a geographic excep tion request and await their chances on the priority list for acceptance. Students whose parents falsify addresses shall be released to their bonafide home district school.

By law, a pupil must attend school until the age of 18 or upon fulfilling the graduation requirements.
