Homework Policy

Homework is viewed as a valuable way in which the instruction given during the school day can be reinforced, applied, or extended. It is assigned to all grade levels, and students are expected to complete the assignments. The time required, complexity, and frequency of assignments must be appropriate to the needs and developmental level of students. Assignments are structured to enable students to practice basic skills, desirable study skills, gain more information, and foster the use of information, knowledge, and skills in creating experiences and products that are their own.

Set times and a place in the cafeteria for doing homework are provided for students before and after school under the supervision of the Early Arrival and After School Plus (A+) Program teachers. Homework policy and expectations are communicated in writing to parents and students, as well as through conferences and parent orientation programs. Teachers provide frequent check points through student conferences and check lists to monitor progress on long-range assignments and give immediate feedback on daily assignments.

Parents are informed of incomplete assignments through phone calls, notices, and conferences. Students with incomplete assignments are expected to complete them by using their non-instruc tional time during the school day as well as before and after school hours.

If a student is absent for a day, the teacher will make provisions to assist the student to com plete missed work when he/she returns to school. If a student is absent two days or more, parents may call the school on the second day before 9:00 a.m. and request for work. Parents may pick up the child's work in the school office between 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. When calls are made after 9:00 a.m., homework will be ready in the office the following day.
