Nuuanu Elementary School: Our Parents and Community Working Together

Hi! My name is ___ and ___ and we are students of Nuuanu Elementary School. Today we would like to share with you activities and projects for the 2010 - 2011 school year. This video is a gift from Nuuanu Elementary School thanking you for your support.

As you know, Nuuanu Elementary School was established in 1960 and is located in beautiful Nuuanu Valley. This is our 50th Anniversary year. The school serves approximately 365 students in grades kindergarten to grade 5.

Parental and Community support has always played a major part at our school.

Anchor 1: In our video clip, we would like to share some of our special parent/community events. Two major organizations play an important role at our school. One group is called Aikane O Nuuanu and is comprised of our parents, faculty and staff members. The other organization is our Nuuanu School Community Council. These two organizations along with our Parent Community Networking Center provide support and assistance to continuously improve the quality of education that we have at Nuuanu Elementary School

Anchor 2: For example, Nuuanu School Community Council enable shared decision-making among principals, teachers, school staff, parents, students and community members to improve student achievement.

The mission of Aikane `0 Nuuanu (“Friends of Nuuanu”) is to foster a spirit of "ohana" between students, parents, faculty, staff and the community surrounding Nuuanu Elementary School. They sponsor fundraising events such as the fall fundraiser and the very popular Family Fun Night.

Aikane `0 Nuuanu also encourages volunteerism to enhance the quality of education at our school. Aikane O Nuuanu provides supplemental funding for new textbooks, field trip expenses, laptop computers and ipads, a web-based library catalog system (Destiny), and technologies for all students to use.

The two groups work hand in hand together to help fulfill our goal of preparing our students to be literate in a world of rapid technological changes.

Parents, grandparents and community members are invited to view the student performance. Everyone has a good time.
